The USS Midway’s Supply and Replenishment operations were essential to keeping the aircraft carrier and its thousands of sailors supplied during extended deployments far from port. Enormous quantities of food, aviation fuel, ship fuel, spare parts, ammunition, mail, and other necessities had to be carefully stored, tracked, and distributed throughout the ship. While underway, the Midway could receive supplies from other Navy ships during underway replenishment, a carefully coordinated operation in which vessels traveled alongside one another while fuel was transferred through hoses and supplies were moved across by cables or delivered by helicopter. Supply personnel then managed the complex task of getting these materials to the departments that needed them, from the galley and engineering spaces to aviation maintenance and the flight deck. These operations allowed the USS Midway to remain at sea for long periods and demonstrate the extraordinary logistical network required to keep a floating city and its air wing ready for action anywhere in the world.
