The USS Midway’s Officers’ Quarters provide a glimpse into the living conditions of the Navy officers who called the aircraft carrier home during long deployments at sea. While generally offering more privacy than the tightly packed berthing spaces used by enlisted sailors, officers’ accommodations were still compact and designed to make efficient use of the ship’s limited space. Depending on rank and assignment, officers might share a small stateroom furnished with bunks, desks, storage lockers, sinks, and other basic necessities, while senior officers received somewhat larger accommodations. Located nearby were officers’ wardrooms, lounges, and workspaces where they could eat, meet, and conduct shipboard business. These preserved quarters aboard the USS Midway help illustrate the unique experience of living and working aboard a floating city, where even senior personnel spent months at sea with little space and virtually every aspect of daily life contained within the ship.
