The USS Midway’s Hangar Deck is a vast interior space that once served as the carrier’s primary area for maintaining, repairing, and preparing aircraft for flight operations. Located directly beneath the flight deck, the hangar stretches through much of the ship and was connected to the flight deck by enormous aircraft elevators capable of moving planes between the two levels. During active service, the space bustled with sailors, mechanics, aircraft, equipment, and supplies as crews worked around the clock to keep the carrier’s air wing ready for action. Today, the Hangar Deck serves as one of the main areas of the USS Midway Museum, featuring historic aircraft, exhibits, restored spaces, and displays that tell the stories of the thousands of sailors and aviators who served aboard the ship.
