The Grumman TBM Avenger was a rugged carrier-based torpedo bomber that became one of the most important U.S. Navy aircraft of World War II. First entering combat in 1942, the Avenger was designed to operate from aircraft carriers and carried a crew of three: pilot, turret gunner, and radioman/bombardier. Its large internal bomb bay could carry a torpedo, bombs, or depth charges, allowing the aircraft to attack enemy ships, submarines, and ground targets. Avengers served extensively throughout the Pacific, including in major battles such as Guadalcanal and the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and continued in military service after the war. With its powerful engine, folding wings, distinctive rotating gun turret, and imposing size, the Avenger remains one of the most recognizable naval aircraft of the World War II era.
