The USS Midway (CV-41) is one of America’s most celebrated aircraft carriers and a defining landmark along San Diego’s waterfront. Commissioned in 1945, just days after the end of World War II, the Midway served the U.S. Navy for an extraordinary 47 years, participating in major operations during the Cold War, Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm. At the time of her commissioning, she was the largest ship in the world and went on to accommodate generations of increasingly advanced naval aircraft. Today, the historic carrier is permanently docked along San Diego’s Embarcadero as the USS Midway Museum, where visitors can explore the massive flight deck, aircraft collection, crew quarters, engine spaces, and command areas while experiencing what life was like aboard a working U.S. Navy aircraft carrier.
