The USS Midway’s Anchor Room and Fo’c’sle (Forecastle) are located in the forward section of the ship and contain the massive equipment used to anchor and secure the aircraft carrier. Here, sailors operated powerful windlasses, capstans, and other machinery that controlled the Midway’s enormous anchors and heavy anchor chains as they were lowered to the seafloor or hauled back aboard. The fo’c’sle was a busy working area during anchoring, mooring, and towing operations, requiring careful coordination among sailors on deck and personnel on the bridge. The tremendous size of the chains, fittings, and machinery provides a striking sense of the forces involved in securing a ship as large as the Midway. Today, this preserved area gives visitors a fascinating look at traditional seamanship and the heavy-duty equipment that helped safely anchor and maneuver one of the U.S. Navy’s largest warships.
