The USS Midway’s Flight Operations and Air Traffic Control rooms were the nerve centers for coordinating the complex movement of aircraft on and around the carrier. From these spaces high in the ship’s Island and below decks, flight controllers and other personnel monitored aircraft launches and recoveries, tracked planes in the surrounding airspace, communicated with pilots, and helped safely sequence approaching aircraft for landing. Using radar, radios, status boards, and other specialized equipment, these teams maintained a constantly changing picture of flight activity while working closely with the crews on the flight deck and the ship’s command personnel. During busy flight operations, dozens of aircraft could be launching, returning, circling, or awaiting instructions, requiring extraordinary precision and teamwork. Today, these preserved spaces aboard the USS Midway give visitors a fascinating look behind the scenes at the people and technology that helped turn an aircraft carrier into a highly coordinated floating airfield.
