The USS Midway’s Ship’s Services helped make life aboard the carrier function much like a small city at sea, providing thousands of sailors with many of the everyday necessities they needed during long deployments. The ship’s store offered toiletries, snacks, personal items, and other supplies, while the post office and mail room connected sailors with family and friends back home. The disbursing office handled pay and other financial matters, and large laundry facilities cleaned an enormous volume of uniforms, bedding, and linens for the crew. Other services aboard the ship included barber shops, tailor and repair facilities, and additional support spaces devoted to the everyday needs of the Midway’s population. Together, these operations provided an important sense of normalcy and demonstrated the remarkable infrastructure required to support a floating community of several thousand sailors while operating for months at sea.
