The USS Midway’s Enlisted Berthing areas were home to the thousands of sailors who lived aboard the aircraft carrier during deployments that could last for months at a time. Space was extremely limited, with sailors sleeping in narrow bunks stacked several high and arranged closely together in large compartments shared by dozens of shipmates. Each sailor had only a small locker or storage area for uniforms and personal belongings, while nearby heads provided shared sinks, showers, and restroom facilities. With the Midway operating around the clock, sailors worked different watches and often slept while others nearby were preparing for duty, returning from work, or moving through the ship. Privacy was scarce, but these crowded living spaces fostered strong friendships and camaraderie among the crew. Today, the preserved enlisted berthing areas offer visitors a vivid sense of what everyday life was like for the sailors who lived, worked, and slept aboard the USS Midway while serving far from home.
