The USS Midway’s Ship’s Brig was the carrier’s secure detention area for sailors who were temporarily confined for serious disciplinary violations or while awaiting further military legal proceedings. Like a small jail within the ship, the brig contained locked cells and closely controlled spaces where prisoners lived under strict supervision and followed a highly regulated daily routine. Navy personnel assigned to the brig maintained security, enforced regulations, and ensured those confined were treated according to established military procedures. Although discipline was an important part of maintaining order among the thousands of sailors aboard the Midway, confinement in the brig was reserved for situations requiring greater restrictions than ordinary disciplinary measures. Today, the preserved Ship’s Brig provides visitors with an unusual glimpse into another aspect of life aboard a large aircraft carrier and illustrates how the Midway functioned as a remarkably self-contained community during months at sea.
