The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was a compact, highly maneuverable jet attack aircraft that became one of the most recognizable carrier-based aircraft of the Cold War and Vietnam eras. Entering U.S. Navy service in the 1950s, the Skyhawk was designed to be small, lightweight, and powerful, earning the nickname “Scooter” for its nimble performance. Despite its modest size, the A-4 could carry an impressive load of bombs, rockets, missiles, and other ordnance and was used extensively for attack and close-air-support missions during the Vietnam War. Its compact design was particularly well suited to aircraft carriers, and its wings were small enough that they did not require folding for storage aboard ship. Skyhawks flew from the USS Midway during combat operations in Southeast Asia, becoming an important part of the carrier’s air wing and operational history. Fast, rugged, and remarkably versatile, the A-4 remained in U.S. military service for decades and became one of the most successful naval attack aircraft ever produced.
